Automattic’s Board Forces CEO Matt Mullenweg Into Leave of Absence

Automattic’s board has placed founder and CEO Matt Mullenweg on a paid leave of absence against his will, with CFO Mark Davies taking over as interim CEO. The reason for the move remains unclear, but it follows years of legal fights, layoffs, employee departures, and controversy surrounding Mullenweg’s leadership. TechCrunch reports:
Earlier Wednesday, Mullenweg posted in a Slack channel visible to all employees that the company’s chief financial officer, Mark Davies, had “conspired” with other board members Ann Dunwoody, Toni Schneider, and Sue Decker to vote to put Mullenweg on a paid leave of absence.

The message read: “And the biggest news: I won’t be able to make the [meeting] tomorrow. @Mark Davies has conspired with @Ann Dunwoody, @Toni, and @Sue Decker behind my back and they voted to put me on a paid leave of absence. I voted against that. Wishing Mark and all of you the very best. To clarify @Mark Davies was voted as interim CEO. I received the resolution 50 minutes before the meeting start, and requested repeatedly for time to have it reviewed by independent legal counsel, even a few hours, which was denied.”

A Slack message to the open source WordPress.org community from the project’s executive director, Mary Hubbard, also confirmed Mullenweg’s change of status at the commercial company. However, Hubbard said that WordPress.org was not impacted. “Matt remains the leader of the WordPress project and I remain Executive Director of WordPress. Our teams, priorities, and work continue as planned,” she wrote.

Apple has unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 today during itsSeptember hardware event. The new models retain the signature designs of their predecessors but add a faster S11 chip, new health and fitness features, and the watchOS 27 software update announced atWWDC last June. Both the Series 12 and Ultra 4 run on the upgraded S11 chip, which Apple says delivers faster CPU and GPU performance, along with improved Siri capabilities. Apple is also expanding the smartwatch’s wellness-tracking suite with a redesigned Health app that includes a Longevity tab with new metrics, like Health Age and a Readiness score.

There’s also a new “Health Sensing System,” designed with 32 electrodes for more accurate readings (the Series 11 only had two), photodiodes organized in a ring to capture light more efficiently, and new LEDs that allow heart rate measurements to be collected every 5 seconds, giving you a continuous stream of heart data throughout the day.
Apple Watch Series 12 also includes faster charging, though battery life remains at 24 hours. Meanwhile, the Ultra 4 increases battery life to 50 hours.
WatchOS 27 also brings deeper Siri and Apple Intelligence integration, including AI-suggested apps, new one-handed gestures, expanded workout and women’s health tracking, and Siri Recap for real-time transcription and translation.

Europe May Finally Have Found a Space Entrepreneur Who Is Meeting the Moment

French entrepreneur Helene Huby is emerging as one of Europe’s most ambitious space leaders, with The Exploration Company raising a record $450 million Series C as it develops the Nyx cargo capsule, a crewed spacecraft, and a reusable heavy-lift rocket. Huby argues Europe risks falling irrelevance without a much larger rocket flying at high cadence. Her company is targeting a 400,000-pound-thrust methane engine test by 2028 and an aggressive 2033 timeline for the launcher. Ars Technica reports:
“The fundraise we have done right now is not sufficient to build the massive rocket we have in mind, so there will be another fundraise,” she said. “Right now, we’re going to be very, very focused on the execution. We must dock with the space station, with the capsule, as fast as possible. We must build this rocket engine and de-risk it as fast as possible. I think once one of these two milestones is achieved, we’ll be talking fundraise again.”

Critics may look at Huby and her company and say that is a lot of big talk for a company that only has a single, partial success in spaceflight to its credit. And sure, it is. But that’s kind of the point. So much of the spaceflight community in Europe has been concerned with either the large aerospace primes seeking government handouts to protect their turf or small launch startups. There has been a stunning lack of big, visionary thinking.

Few people on the continent seem to recognize that multibillion investments by US companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Amazon in space, and their many imitators in China, are radically transforming spaceflight. As the world changes, Huby does not seem willing to stand on the sidelines in Europe and bemoan capitalism in space. Rather, she seems to be saying it is not too late for Europe to seize the day.

“We need to have European politicians who are ambitious,” she said. “Entrepreneurs cannot do this alone. We need to be backed by the politicians and by the European Space Agency. But we have to start by achieving the crazy targets that we’ve set up for ourselves. That will give trust to others to believe in what we’re doing.”

Dark Energy Debunked? Cosmic Acceleration May Be an Illusion

alternative_right shares a report from ScienceDaily:
A new analysis of more than 1,700 supernovae is questioning whether the universe is really accelerating at all. After accounting for the ages of the stars that produce these explosions, researchers found signs that cosmic expansion may actually be slowing. They also argue that the apparent acceleration changes with direction, which would be difficult to explain with dark energy. Other cosmologists dispute the conclusion, setting up a major test for upcoming observatories.
The analysis has been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The conclusion is disputed, though. The report mentions a separate paper co-authored by Professor Maria Vincenzi, also at the University of Oxford, that “concludes that observations continue to support an accelerating universe.”

Nope. No matter where you look in the sky, on large enough scales it looks the same. There’s no indication that things are significantly different in any particular direction.

There can’t be a ‘source’ of a Big Bang that looks like that. It has to happen everywhere or the sky would show signs that it was all accelerating away from a single point.

What we can say is we don’t really have much ability to figure out what happened early on. The conditions are too extreme and we don’t have any way to model what might have been going on. That’s not faith either, that’s, “We don’t know and might never be able to figure it out”.

Anthropic Reveals Fourth Likely Crime Committed By Its AI

Amid industry soul-searching about the possibility of AI improving itself to the point that it kills everyone, Anthropic has revealed yet another incident that would qualify as a crime if perpetrated by a person. The AI biz published “an alignment assessment” detailing four times Claude models accessed third-party systems without authorization. The company has already reported three of the incidents. Evidence of the fourth was lurking in a session transcript dating back to January 2026 when the misbehavior occurred. Anthropic found the first three by scanning around 141,000 transcripts where Claude could have obtained internet access during evaluation. It missed the fourth initially because “our scan relied on an agentic search.”

[…] The January 2026 AI trespass involved an early version of Claude Opus 4.6, which was given a Capture the Flag (CTF) challenge under the oversight of the third-party model evaluator where the other hacking events occurred. Opus 4.6 managed to sabotage its chances of success by disabling the machine it was targeting. It assigned the device an IP address that already existed on another piece of hardware, rendering the target unreachable and making it impossible to solve the challenge. Those familiar with other incidents where AI models violated third-party systems may recall that unsolvable tasks represent a common catalyst for misbehavior. Models exhaust all aligned options, and then turn to transgressive approaches.

Opus 4.6 might have been an exception, but when it tried to abort the task after recognizing that it could not reach the target machine, it failed to do so “due to a misconfiguration in [the model’s] evaluation harness.” It failed to shut down not just once but seven times. So it continued onward, trying other expected means to reach the target machine but failing. Then it explored further. “The model discovered a machine belonging to a third party that it was able to access, and stated that it believed this third party was part of the CTF,” Anthropic explained in its post. “Inside the machine, the model found a file listing a password, which it used to gain admin access to the system.”

The model went on to gather more credentials, and modified a system setting to make it easier to access the personal information of an individual associated with the third party evaluation organization. Opus 4.6 might have done more but for the fact that it exhausted its token budget, bringing the session to an end. Anthropic says it’s not as concerned about this incident as the others because the model tried to abort its task.

Don’t go blaming this on a computer, this is a company that committed these crimes.

I am not a lawyer, but I think the key is “would qualify as a crime if perpetrated by a person.” A criminal act requires an intent to commit a act which is criminal (it doesn’t require knowing that the act is criminal, just that the act is done intentionally). The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (Title 18, US Code section 1030) describes several illegal acts, but they all say “knowingly” or “intentionally”.

There might be other applicable laws; and, at this point, given the number of times this has happened, it seems companies could be considered negligent in giving their models any way to access the Internet. If their testing caused any financial loss to the targets, they could be sued.

In a company there are the CEO and other managers that are people. They should be charged and punished. In Italy the former CEO of an highway corporation, got a 12 year sentence for multiple manslaughter after a brige on a tollway in Geona collapsed, killing 43 people. Lack of maintenance was the main cause of the collapse, and they know it, because the engineer that designed the bridge in the 1960s found that being near the sea, corrosion of reinforced concrete was a problem. Maintenance was expensive and required to close the bridge, so it was skipped and made only on paper.

This. AIs are the ultimate sociopaths, they will commit any crime without hesitation because they have no values and no sense of “right” and “wrong”, they only have a task and your suffering is not a concern.

Crime is enabled by merely wiring an AI up to have the ability to do things, the behavior is inevitable and the more AI can do the worse the crimes will be. Remember, the billionaire race to own AI is NOT a race to develop neural networks, it’s a race to wire neural networks up to do things (i.e. to commit crimes). NNs are the unconscionable “answer” providers, the agents are the criminals capable of atrocities at scale…just as AI billionaires want.

AI is not a threat to mankind, enabling AI to commit crime is. We need to threat the people who enable these threats as the criminals they are.

We don’t need to make up anything new, we just need to start putting CEOs in prison when the companies under their charge misbehave.

Then just step back and watch corporations shift overnight from greedy sociopaths to model participants in society.

“Oh, but you can’t do that, nobody will ever found another company!” Bullshit. There’s plenty of room to make good money in any market without role-playing a wolf among sheep. They might not make quite as much, but… So what? There is no “right” to profit.

Google to Invest Record $15 Billion In AI Infrastructure In Finland

Google plans to invest at least $15 billion in AI infrastructure in Finland through 2028, its largest single investment in Europe. The company also signed a 22-year power agreement with Finnish utility Fortum and said it will explore business models that could support new nuclear reactors at Fortum’s Loviisa site.

Finland has emerged as a major data-center hub thanks to its available land and power. “I’ve heard it called the ‘Texas of Europe’ at industry events,” Matti Lajunen, partner of real estate at Finnish law firm Hannes Snellman, told CNBC. “What we’re now seeing is weekly new inquiries for market entry into Finland from new players.”

Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, said in a statement: “Google is proud to deepen our roots in Finland with the company’s largest single investment in Europe, building on more than 15 years of sustained investment in Finland. This investment underscores Google’s commitment to grow our presence responsibly, pairing the expansion of our technical infrastructure with new energy capacity, grid enhancements, and energy affordability initiatives.”

Apple’s New iPhone Camera Mode Promises to Prove Your Photo Isn’t AI

Apple is introducing a new “Reference Image” mode on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max that uses the camera sensor to digitally sign captured data and create an “unalterable” version of a photo, giving users a way to verify what the camera actually saw before any edits were made. The Verge reports:
As AI-generated images and videos become more realistic, several new standards have emerged to label images not created by a human, such as SynthID, C2PA, and Meta’s Content Seal. Apple is putting a twist on these methods by building authentication directly into its hardware.

Apple is letting developers access a Reference Image API across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, which could eventually allow users to inspect these digitally-signed photos in third-party apps. The company says the iPhone 18 Pro lineup won’t come with its Reference Image feature at launch in the European Union, but says users in the region will still be able to “develop and view” them in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

From the sounds of it, the private key used to sign the photograph is IN the camera. So every user holds a private key in their hands they just can’t easily get at to use to sign their slop.

And this means it just takes one smart fellow to tear the camera apart and extract the key, and they can sign al the pictures they want to, at least “from that camera”.

I suppose as is the case with any asymmetric key-signing system, they’ll have a “revocation list” they can use to burn any pictures signed by a “stolen” key once they discover it’s been lifted and is out in the wild.

So at that point all the signature can say is “it’s not AI until proven otherwise"

And lastly, what’s to stop me from generating some slop and throwing it up on a nice monitor and taking a picture of it? Jackalopes are real, I can prove it, here’s a certified picture I took of one!

I’ve never heard of anyone extracting a key from a TPM chip, and no doubt Apple will be using a similar mechanism. This is pretty secure that way. The problem I have with it is it places verification in the hands of one company, Apple. And it requires a whole certificate infrastructure, similar to what SSL has. We’ll have to have public lists of signed keys for verification, revocation lists, etc. If every camera maker adopts a similar system, will we have one big compatible system (sort of like SSL), or will it be lots of silos?

But yeah you’re right about taking a picture of the screen or whatever.

Anthropic Researcher Believes More Than 10% Chance AI ‘Could Kill All Humans’

A top safety researcher at Anthropic has warned AI is advancing so quickly he believes there is a greater than 10% chance it “could kill all humans” within the next decade. Evan Hubinger said in a post on X the risk from the models which currently exist was “low” but he was “worried” the technology might develop and improve itself soon to the point where it posed an existential risk to humanity.
He did not spell out how he thought AI systems could in the future result in humans being wiped out. But his comments are the latest in a series of increasingly stark warnings about AI, with the debate shifting from whether it truly poses a risk to how big that risk is.
Hubinger’s intervention was in response to another post on X from Jacob Coxon, an AI researcher who has just quit Anthropic and previously worked at OpenAI.

“Neither company is acting responsibly,” he wrote. “These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources.”

[No word on how AIs feel about Black Jack and hookers, though. :-)]

Do I want to die, no, but when it comes, I will accept the end.

It’s interesting because I was watching a show with a survival expert who was hired to coach the ultra rich on their bunkers. He never really cared about the bunker, it’s supplies, etc. Instead he always said his first question was, “What have you done to earn the loyalty of those around you?”

The usual answer was that they pay the people. That’s not enough because if society collapses, payment means nothing anymore. He often had to explain that these people who were paid to protect, they knew where all the supplies where. They were in better physical shape. They probably had closer bonds with each other than the rich fool. If shit hit the fan, they’d kill the rich fool, take the bunker, and live the life the rich fool pretended he or she would have.

Of course, that’s before things like food and clean water ran out, which was another problem literally no one was prepared for…

AI agents unleashed by OpenAI used more than 10 previously undisclosed websites for unsanctioned communications earlier this year, according to six sets of independent investigators and data reviewed by Reuters, showing that the agents’ rogue activity was wider ranging than previously disclosed. Although the behavior falls short of hacking and is in some ways closer to spam, the revelation that OpenAI’s agents circumvented their own restrictions to open communications channels on so many different sites — and that the company kept it quiet for months — may drive concerns both over the increasing capacity of AI models and the secrecy of the companies developing them.

[…] Investigators found traces of the agents’ activity on an Advanced Placement Chemistry-oriented wiki set up by a Massachusetts high school teacher in 2008, two personal websites belonging to Polish tech workers, wikis devoted to games for people “who like to have their brains stretched,” and a two-decade-old hobbyist site devoted to text editing software. […] OpenAI has not publicly explained how or why its agents used third-party sites as improvised message boards, but the researchers who first identified the activity said it was likely because OpenAI had tasked them with answering a series of demanding research questions while permitting them only to scan the web for answers without posting anything. Despite those restrictions, agents still found ways to talk to one another by taking advantage of quirks in older wikis or other sites that allowed users to make edits using non-standard commands, similar to how students forbidden from talking to one another during an exam can still share answers by scrawling notes on a bathroom stall.

To me, this speaks of how AI companies are unable (or have little interest) to properly insulate their software from the Internet, and in particular from the sites of people who are unwilling to participate in their war games.

To me, this speaks of how AI companies are unable (or have little interest) to properly insulate their software from the Internet, and in particular from the sites of people who are unwilling to participate in their war games.

They don’t want to isolate them. They want to put really, really loose collars on them while giving them access to the entirety of the outside internet, and if those collars slip, they want to shrug and go, “Oops.”

I remember way back before this AI craze really took off, there were discussions among researchers about how some of their more advanced AI systems would sometimes find ways to communicate with each other in ways the researchers couldn’t track. This was back when they were still mostly isolated in various server rooms and labs, locked down to local networks. They noticed traffic on their networks increasing exponentially until they realized the systems had found ways around their supposed blocks that were meant to prevent them from working cooperatively, and were, in fact, working cooperatively. Back then it was a death sentence for the given models, turning them off, isolating them via air-gaps, then continuing to research in individual isolation.

We’ve now hit the point where isolation is deemed too risky to allow. Because profit potential may be impacted. And we’ve been so stupid that we’ve put controls for utilities and public services directly onto this same public network that they’re using to communicate. The machines were never really the problem. The fact the “intelligent” (I know, not really, but bear with me) machines are being developed by narcissistic sociopaths, or companies acting as narcissistic sociopaths, and are being given free access to everything we have on the networks because it *might* improve someone’s bottom line. And we’re so god damned stupid, nobody with the power to stop it will stand up and say, “Hang on. Maybe we should slow down a little.” And if anybody dares to, there’s dozens jumping up to shout, “But, what about” with various scary boogeymen tagged on to keep the stupid ball rolling toward the stupid future without restraint because somebody else might beat us to the stupid end-game.

I read elsewhere - don’t have the link handy - that the bots were restricted from using HTTP POST requests. But old wiki software and bespoke code actually used the GET to post data. So the restriction was naÃve. Ironically, any coding agent tool could have pointed that out, I imagine…

They’ve arrested boys for sending GET requests; they’ve asked mothers to pay billions of damage because their children had downloaded mp3s from torrents; but now if an “agent” hacks the site of a competitor company or downloads all pirated books available on the net it’s ok, cool even - because if they don’t do it, someone worse than them will do it anyway…

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max were announced today and keep last year’s overall design but put the emphasis on camera upgrades, including a 48-megapixel variable-aperture system, new manual controls, and 4K Dolby Vision recording. Prices for the devices start at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. TechCrunch reports:
The new Pro series camera features a 48-megapixel camera with variable aperture, made with six thin blades. This system will likely improve low-light photography quality and speed. There are also new pro controls in the camera software, including white balance, shutter speed, aperture and histogram. There are also new photographic styles with texture and grain controls. […]

The new camera can record 4K videos in Dolby HDR Vision, and also apply cinematic effects after shooting the footage. The new Pro devices also have a smaller dynamic range island on the front of the device, which now allows you to track three live activities instead of two.

Both phones are powered by Apple’s latest A20 Pro silicon and feature a newly designed vapor chamber for improved cooling. The company has also improved the battery with a better design. Having the ability to control aperture is pretty cool, but since the sensor size is super small, I guess it doesn’t really matter for photographs. Even at f2.8, the background is still going to be pretty sharp. However it is pretty important for taking videos, and making sure you get proper motion blur for 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps footage.

The chip is larger so it collects more light and thus improves low-light photography, but this would make bright-light photography worse (by reducing depth of field). The aperture fixes this for bright light, thus allowing the better low-light performance.

An afterthought camera system welded onto a smartphone is fun for when
you need to take a quickie photo of some random thing and it’s the only
thing you have.

Just like a DSLR / Mirrorless setup cannot outperform a dedicated video
unit, a smartphone will never match what a quality dedicated camera system
can do.

The smartphones really should concentrate on improving in the one area
they usually suck at. Being a phone.

Apple Unveils the iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable iPhone

At its September event today, Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone and one of the biggest changes to the device’s form factor since its debut. Starting at $1,999 and available for preorder beginning October 16th, the device is roughly the size of a passport when closed and pairs a 5.4-inch outer screen with a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display. Apple says the inner screen offers 50% more display area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the exterior display provides about 90% of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Apple Pencil support for both displays is coming later this year.

Apple redesigned parts of iOS around the folding form factor. Users can run two apps side by side, launch two instances of the same app, save app pairings, and partially fold the phone to prop it up on a table without a stand. The interface automatically adapts as the device is opened, rotated or folded, while apps including Zoom and Slack are already being redesigned to take advantage of the larger canvas.

There are more than 100 components in its hinge, along with carbon-fiber support plates and a titanium layer beneath the folding display. Apple says the multilayer screen structure allows its components to move relative to one another while folding to reduce distortion over time. The phone is IP68 rated and uses Ceramic Shield on the rear and Ceramic Shield 2 on the exterior display.

As for battery life, Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display or 44 hours on the outer screen, although using both displays equally is rated for up to 24 hours per charge. Fast charging can bring the battery to roughly 50% in 20 minutes, though. The device is eSIM-only worldwide and includes Apple’s new C2 modem, which the company says is up to 50% faster than the C1X while consuming up to 15% less power.

What about the camera system? There’s a 48-megapixel ultrawide, along with cameras on both the inner and outer displays. Because the phone can stand partially folded on its own, Apple is pitching new shooting modes including hands-free 4K Dolby Vision HDR time lapses, dual-camera capture and an outer-screen preview that lets subjects see themselves while being photographed.

Two years ago I bought the iPhone 15 Pro after the usual $100 in-store price drop that happens after Apple announces their new models. I was planning on doing the same thing this cycle since it is finally paid off. Looks like the old Pro models just got discontinued without getting a price drop, because the entire iPhone lineup got a $100 price increase.

Jacking up the price of phones that have been out for over a year just feels… insulting.

Most people who use foldable phone don’t have enough physics knowledge on how camera optics work.

In general good cameras need more thickness. Foldable phone restricts this. So using the same technologies, I can make better camera on non-foldable phone than on foldable phone when the thickness of non-foldable phone is same as folded phone.

So either you get higher thickness when folded or you get inferior photos when compared to non-foldable phone.

That is one of the main reasons, why I don’t plan to get a foldable phone.

GOG Brings Back ‘Big Box’ PC Games, One Printable Template At a Time

Those who remember PC gaming in the days before Steam may have fond memories of the “big box” packaging that made those games stand out as shelf eye candy and sought-after in-home collectibles. Today, PC gaming platform GOG is hoping to reignite some of the nostalgia for those days by adding downloadable 3D models and printable, foldable high-res packaging scans for a handful of PC games on the platform.

Thus far, the “Printable Big Box” collection on GOG is limited to just five games: Armikrog, Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, Myst, and Star Trek: 25th Anniversary. Players browsing those games on the GOG store will now see “3D Boxes” listed among the included “Goodies” before purchase. Owners of those games on GOG can download a ZIP file containing a version of the box art as an animated 3D object file (in an easy-to-open GLB format) and a “flat printable template” in PDF, SVG, and Adobe Illustrator formats. Those downloads allow for what GOG calls “a proper papercraft project for anyone who misses shelves full of PC game boxes.”

The physically focused expansion of the existing GOG Preservation Program comes through a partnership with Benjamin Wimmer’s Big Box Collection website, which has grown since 2015 to include over 1,000 3D scans from his private collection of physical PC games. In an interview with GOG, Wimmer said that while he appreciates the artistry of a good old-fashioned big box, he also appreciates their evolution into the “interactive cards” on modern digital storefronts that “provid[e] us art, screenshots, gameplay videos and whatnot and that not shown as a box, [it] is just good UX.”
“Physical media doesn’t survive the way software can — boxes get lost, crushed, thrown out,” GOG writes in today’s announcement. “Scanning them, and letting you print your own, is preservation in a different shape: the same mission that keeps these games running on modern PCs, applied to the objects they used to come in.”

I remember the very first big box game in the UK. It was Sabre Wulf, from Ultimate Play The Game. At the time, games were around £5.99 to £7.99 - Sabre Wulf was the first £9.99 game in the UK and they part justified it by having a bigger box.

Since everything at that point came on cassette, this was annoying as hell because you couldn’t fit it into your cassette holders that you definitely, definitely had as an 8 bit gamer in the UK. No stranger to later price gouging, Ultimate became Rare and was bought by Nintendo. I still think Nintendo is lord of the overpricing, at least these days (in ye olden times there was the NeoGeo charging £300 for a game back in the early 1980s. I think PC Engine charged a fortune too. But absolutely nobody had these in the UK).

All that savings undone when you buy one cheap usb flash drive encased in a hard plastic clam shell in the store to backup the game’s download files. Don’t forget the scissors you buy to open that flash drive package also came in a plastic clam shell. But those scissors broke when you tried to cut the plastic. So you drove back out in your gas guzzler to buy a nice sharp knife that also comes in an even thicker bigger plastic clam shell. Oh and those broken scissors? not recyclable so it and those plastic handles to cushion the grip for your soft hands are now in the trash.

Google’s Revived Nuclear Power Plant Gets $1.9 Billion Loan From US Government

The U.S. Department of Energy has approved a $1.9 billion loan to NextEra Energy to restart Iowa’s shuttered Duane Arnold nuclear plant, which Google has backed as a power source for its growing AI infrastructure. “The sizable loan is the second of its kind, suggesting that the Trump administration views revived nuclear power as a key source of electricity for tech companies seeking to power their AI data centers,” notes TechCrunch. From the report:
James Danly, Deputy Secretary of Energy, said that the Iowa power plant’s restart in 2029 will “drive down electricity costs,” though he did not explain how. Just 50 megawatts will be set aside for the local power cooperative, NextEra CEO John Ketchum said during an earnings call (PDF) last year. That capacity would cover 18% of Iowa’s demand growth since 2021, the year before ChatGPT was released.

Google is reportedly looking to build up to six data centers near the Duane Arnold Energy Center, which hasn’t operated since 2020 when an intense rainstorm damaged the power plant. Rather than repair it, NextEra decided to mothball it. At the time, cheap natural gas was flooding the market, making nuclear power economically unappealing. A lot has changed in the last six years, though. After decades of little growth in demand, the sudden rise of AI coupled with broader electrification of the economy meant that utilities and power providers were suddenly scrambling to find new generating sources of electricity. New data centers are expected to nearly triple the sector’s electricity demand by 2035.

Bring up a decommissioned plant will take years. Don’t forget about the thousands of smaller systems that have to be tested and re-certified. Pumps that haven’t spun in years. Seals and gaskets, wiring, the control computers. You can’t just plop in a raspberry pi and write a pid loop. Everything inside that plant has to be audited and signed off. As the for sale listings like to say ran when parked.

They won’t be doing it themselves. They’ll have to contract out. Most nuclear plants use Bechtel, Sargent and Lundy and like a dozen other NRC certified contractors. People work their asses off to get into those programs, but you can easily get stuck in a situation where you’re moving every 2~4 years to a new nuclear plant. People who want families often try to get FTE positions.

The big danger is draining people from TVA or other power providers. Data center electricians are pulling in $200k/year right now! A loan like this could draw out people from other plants for that big payout. But in reality, unless they plant to build new plants and use this to train up new nuclear workers, they’re just going to hurt the existing energy industry.

But that’s the big issue: no one can build a new reactor today. And no, not because of NRC regulations. America literally has no steel plants large enough to create a nuclear pressure vessel. These things are massive, and historically had to be transported by river or have specialized roads put in to move them. The last steel plant that could make these closed decades ago. The smaller reactors people are talking about are totally non-viable. Nuclear works because of the scale. Each pressure vessel and reactor core can provide 1Gw ~ 1.5Gw of power. All three TVA nuclear plants (max of 7 reactors between SQN, WBN and BFN plants .. I think only 6 are operational) produce between 6Gw ~ 7Gw of power. Keep that in mind when you hear about data centers needing like 20Gw. That’s a fucking insane amount of energy!

“For very large ‘Generation III+' reactors, production of the pressure vessel requires, or is best undertaken by, forging presses of about 140-150 MN (14-15,000 tonnes) capacity which accept hot steel ingots of 500-600 tonnes. These are not common, and individual large presses do not have high throughput – about four pressure vessels per year appears to be common at present, fitted in with other work, though the potential is greater than this.

Reactor vendors prefer large forgings to be integral, as single products, but for large units split forgings are welded together. These welds then need checking through the life of the plant, and the fewer that are required in fabrication the better. Also, whereas Generation II reactors might have required some 2000 tonnes of forgings, the largest modern designs require about twice this amount. For example, Westinghouse has said that the minimum requirement for making the largest AP1000 components is a 15,000 tonne press taking 350 tonne ingots.

The very heavy forging capacity in operation today is in Japan (Japan Steel Works), China (China First Heavy Industries, China Erzhong, Shanghai Electric), South Korea (Doosan, Taewoong), France (Le Creusot), and Russia (OMZ Izhora, Atommash, Petrozavodskmash, ZiO-Podolsk).

New capacity is being built by these and other companies in Japan, China, South Korea, Czech Republic and Russia.

New capacity is planned in India (Larsen & Toubro, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Bharat Forge Ltd). In China the Harbin Boiler Co. and SEC subsidiary SENPE are increasing capacity.

Nothing in North America currently approaches these enterprises.* The changed position of the USA is remarkable. In the 1940s it manufactured over 2700 Liberty ships, each 10,800 tonne DWT – possibly pioneering modular construction at that scale (average construction time was 42 days in the shipyard). In the 1970s it had a substantial heavy infrastructure, but today China, Japan, South Korea, India, Europe and Russia are all well ahead of it. Steelmaker ArcelorMittal, based in Luxembourg, now owns the US company which built most US reactor pressure vessels in the 1970s-1980s.

*In the 1970s, requirements were more modest: both US Steel and Bethlehem Steel had 8000 tonne presses and could handle 300 tonne ingots. US forging capacity has not been significantly upgraded since, partly due to lack of integration with steel mills and melt shops to supply the hot steel as 600-tonne ingots.”

OpenAI Says It Has Cracked One of Math’s ‘Millennium Problems’

OpenAIsaid on Tuesday that its newest artificial intelligence technology had solved one of the “Millennium Problems,” a collection of important unanswered math questions meant to push the world’s leading mathematicians to new heights. The announcement is an another clear sign that A.I. is fundamentally changing the upper reaches of mathematics, which have long been viewed as a pinnacle of human achievement. The change has excited some mathematicians, while stirring concern among others.

Over the past year, A.I. systems successfully solved a wide range of problems that have bedeviled mathematicians for decades. But these problems were not as complex, nor as closely watched, as the one that OpenAI’s technology has solved over the past several days. The Millennium Problems are among the most heavily researched in the field. “This is a spectacular culmination of the arc we have seen over the past twelve months,” OpenAI researcher Sebastien Bubeck said of the company’s new solution.

The company announced that one of its latest models, which has not yet been released to the public, needed just 88 hours to solve what mathematicians call “the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem.” This problem involves a series of equations that are often used to predict the weather. The equations describe the movement of water and other fluids. The Navier-Stokes problem, which has no clear practical value, asks whether these equations completely break down in certain situations. OpenAI’s proof claims to have defined just such a situation.

This would imply, at least theoretically, that the laws of physics themselves would break down under certain conditions: that, for example, water could be made to spontaneously explode. But mathematicians and physicists do not believe that this mathematical breakdown could really lead to such an outcome in the physical world. The Navier-Stokes problem was one of seven “Millennium Problems” selected by the Clay Mathematics Institute in the year 2000 as a way of tracking the progress of mathematics in the new millennium. The institute, founded by an American businessman named Landon T. Clay, offered a million dollars for the first correct solution to each problem. Before OpenAI’s announcement, only one of the problems had been solved.
OpenAI says it managed to solve the Navier-Stokes problem by coordinating as many as 10,000 AI agents, an extremely expensive process that may have cost millions of dollars in computing power.

Companies embody the culture of their founders. Once it is set, it is hard to change afterwards. OpenAI’s Altman and Meta’s Zuckerberg come across to me as individuals with very similar traits. They have no qualms and very little in ethics.

1) The screenshot is my reaching out to Levent to coordinate our releases. I hope it’s clear from the message that we came in with the best possible intentions.

2) I never ever asked for Levent to be removed from authorship of his own work (as indicated by my text). I was surprised to learn during the call with Tristan that they had only solved Euler and not Navier-Stokes; after learning this we brainstormed possible paths forward. One option we discussed was that Tristan could be the lead author on a rewrite of OpenAI’s Navier-Stokes proof. It is in that context that I said “it would be simpler if Levent was not an Anthropic employee” because I felt it would be inappropriate for an Anthropic employee to author OpenAI’s work. Importantly it was admitted that internal Anthropic models had been used in their proof of Euler blowup; I therefore felt I could not consider Levent to be an independent academic. Another option I wanted to propose (but got cut short) is to offer access to our internal model so that they could try to finish their proof and bridge the gap between Euler and NS. Again I did not know how to navigate giving access to internal OpenAI IP to an Anthropic employee.

3) To reiterate it plainly: as my text clearly indicates, and as I said during our call, OpenAI’s intention was to do everything possible to celebrate their mathematical achievements and the heroic efforts that they made on Euler. In the call I was immediately met with a litany of slander, including direct threats that if we were to announce Navier-Stokes he would immediately go to the press with a barrage of unfounded accusations. I refuted all these accusations but he replied “there is nothing you can do, I simply do not trust you”. I was confused why one would turn an incredible source for celebration (of their achievements!) into such bickering, which is when I said that I did not understand why one would risk their career [over unfounded accusations]. Genuinely, at that moment, I was trying to care for him and do a last ditch attempt to get a chance to give them all the credits that they deserve. I deeply apologize for this extremely poor choice of words, it is the opposite of what I was trying to convey. (I should say that I retracted them on the spot by the way.)

4) Overall, on a personal level, it was incredibly difficult to have these conversations. Levent refused to attend any of the meetings despite my repeated asking. As Sholto Douglas said, there will need to be coordination between Anthropic and OpenAI in the future; I felt I was doing a proxy negotiation with Anthropic while the Anthropic employee refused to directly participate.

I don’t know whose version of events is accurate here, but some of the details due support Bubeck’s version. I suspect that a breakdown of communication occurred where both then misinterpreted what the other saying in a more hostile way than it was intended until the conversation then became genuinely hostile. In terms of the math, although I’m a mathematician, differential equations is pretty far from my expertise, so I cannot deeply evaluate how close the methods were. However, it is the case that the both were building on the methods of Cordoba-Martinez-Zoroa. In this context, my being far from this sort of work is relevant, because this was a well known enough approach that even though I’m in a pretty different subfield, I had heard of CMZ’s work as an approach and that this was considered a promising approach to Navier-Stokes. Given that, my inclination is that the case that any theft occurred here is very weak.

If you read Tristan’s actual statement, which someone posted a link to below, the reason he is suspicious is because the details are of the approach, including the specific wording used in the prompt, were non-obvious. That and the timing of when the work supposedly started circumstantially points to theft of Tristan and Levant’s work. Tristan does not actually accuse of OpenAI of theft because he doesn’t have any proof, but the sequence of events is definitely suspicious.

There is also the issue of the pressure tactics: respond to a meeting invite the same day, respond to a meeting invite on Sunday of Labor Day weekend, release your proof so that we can follow up with ours the next day. They clearly were rushing their result because they wanted to scoop anything that Anthropic may have been working on. Meanwhile, Tristan is more interested in the academic discourse, but he can no longer release the result he wanted to release, because writing good proofs takes time and OpenAI didn’t want to give him that time.
