During Starship V3’s inaugural test, there were numerous engine issues as several on the booster failed to relight and the Starship spacecraft experienced a nail-biting engine outage. SpaceX also was forced to replace six engines on this vehicle ahead of today’s flight because of a likely issue with moisture that prevented at least four from starting up correctly during an initial launch attempt last week… [Friday’s Super Heavy rocket booster] fired all 33 of its engines in a pristine performance off the launchpad. The rocket booster also managed to relight 13 engines, as planned, to steer itself back toward a controlled landing. Only when Super Heavy attempted to relight its engines for a controlled landing burn over the Gulf waters did problems arise. The landing was still controlled, though Huot said the vehicle was traveling a bit faster than the company had hoped when it made touchdown. (SpaceX always intended to discard this Super Heavy booster in the ocean.)CNN adds that SpaceX “is facing intense pressure to get Starship ready for a crucial NASA test flight next year that could pave the way for the next moon landing. This flight was also the first for SpaceX as a publicly traded company. Last week’s aborted launch attempt sparked a selloff, and shares are still trading below their IPO price.

You want to access that data in the cloud and then clear all session keys and access tokens, along with browser history when you cross the border. The border search doesn’t extend beyond your phone, and they actually put your phone in airplane mode when they do the search. They can however, inter your phone for however long they wish, and you up to 5 days before you can file a writ of habeus corpus.

One thing Roku has done well is make it easy and relatively cheap to get the device going as a streamer. As I went from real cable to streaming including YouTube TV, their devices were easiest to use especially on TVs that weren’t “smart” (another topic altogether). In my case they are also good when helping elderly parents downsize and use more basic streaming for TV.
I have had a stick die. Those things get so hot. The streaming speakers are pretty good. Our guest room has the branded TV. For the price, I think $140 for a 40”, it’s been great, but yeah the prices are going up.

I can still recall the excitement with that first Redhat 3.03 book and CD I received, sitting in front of a 16MHz i386sx, craving change. I had owned a Vax 11/730, an LMI Lambda, an SGI 210GTXB, but they were just stupid expensive to run and it took a couple friends to move them.

I let an RTX 5060Ti go cheap a few months ago, 16GB was just not enough. I don’t regret this, but I wish my income position would change. One important distinction between Opus 5 and Mythos, which is currently only available to a limited number of vetted organizations through Anthropic’s Project Glasswing initiative, is that the company has specifically avoided training the new model on cyber-related tasks. Due to more its powerful capabilities, Opus 5 is broadly better at those tasks than its predecessor, making it more useful for finding cybersecurity vulnerabilities, but the company says Opus 5 is “substantially behind” its flagship model at exploiting those vulnerabilities.

Stripe is in talks to buy OpenRouter, an artificial intelligence (AI) startup that could sell for roughly $10 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal. The move would mark a significant step outside payments for a company that processes transactions for much of the internet. It also lands while Stripe pursues a far larger target: a bid for PayPal that would value the payments giant at about $53 billion.
The Journal reported Thursday (July 23) that a transaction could be announced soon, though the talks could still collapse or another buyer could step in. The exact price under discussion could not be learned. Several other large technology companies had also been weighing deals for OpenRouter. The startup was valued at $1.3 billion in May, according to PitchBook, meaning a sale near $10 billion would represent a steep markup in a matter of months. Its backers include Menlo Ventures and CapitalG, the growth fund of Google parent Alphabet.
OpenRouter sells software that lets customers reach AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic, along with open weight alternatives anyone can download and run. The Journal described the company’s position this way: “OpenRouter is part of an emerging crop of startups that have found a lucrative niche between AI developers and the companies that want to use them.” The platform lists hundreds of large language models and lets developers compare and switch between them.

The star CD-35 2722 is located around 73 light-years away and has around half the mass of the sun. It is orbited by a “failed star” or brown dwarf. These stellar bodies get their unfortunate nickname because they form like other stars but fail to gather enough mass to trigger the fusion of hydrogen to helium in their cores. In terms of mass, brown dwarfs are more massive than the largest gas giant planets, but smaller than the smallest stars, usually with around 13 to 80 times the mass of Jupiter, or around 0.013 to 0.08 times the mass of the sun.The findings have been published in the journal Nature.
The newly discovered object in CD-35 2722 is certainly moon-like, but rather than orbiting a planet as the moons in the solar system do, it orbits the system’s brown dwarf. “This system is somewhat hard to define using solar-system-based words like ‘planet’ and ‘moon.’ The exosatellite is clearly massive enough to be a planet, but it does not orbit a star, though it orbits an object that orbits a star,” team leader Kevin Hoy of the Universidad Diego Portales and the Millennium Nucleus of Young Exoplanets and their Moons (YEMS) in Chile, said in a statement. “Being the third wheel in this system makes us want to call it a moon, even if it is nothing like the small, rocky moons we have in our system.”
The team currently isn’t able to definitively claim this object in CD-35 2722 is an exomoon, because that would require really nailing down a new definition of what a moon is. “The satellite we report is a giant gaseous body orbiting a highly massive companion, itself several times the mass of Jupiter. We have a clear delineation between the planets and the sun in the solar system, so defining things like moons is simple,” team member Alice Zurlo of the Universidad Diego Portales said. “In the CD-35 2722 system, where we are blurring the lines between stars, planets, and moons, the whole thing becomes more complicated to describe.” Zurlo and colleagues can, however, confidently claim this is an exosatellite, meaning it is a first-of-its-kind detection no matter what the future holds for its classification.

A study published in PLOS One in 2021 by researchers from Durham University in the UK showed that with 10 weeks of training, both blind and sighted people could learn to echolocate using verbal clicks. While the technique is already used by a number of people with impaired vision — sometimes using the taps of a cane instead of clicks made by their mouth — those findings suggest that many of us can learn the necessary techniques.
Some of the same researchers who made that discovery are part of the team behind a follow-up study published in Cerebral Cortex, looking at how the 10 weeks of training that the 26 participants went through actually changed the physical structure of their brains. Specifically, the team analyzed brain scans of the V1 (the primary visual cortex, processing visuals), and the A1 (the primary auditory cortex, processing sounds). Strikingly, the scans showed that the V1s of both blind and sighted people had developed sensitivity to sound echoes during echolocation training.
It’s likely because dogs and cats can adjust their ears likely leads to their lowered spatial accuracy - because moving their ears around adds a new wrinkle to determining location - the ear position.
And when you add that to the mix, you need to calibrate your ear positioning in order to increase spatial accuracy.
Humans have basically fixed ears, which means we cannot change their location or position. We can distort them, but that takes time and the brain is plastic enough to compensate. Thus in humans we do not have to figure out which way our ears are pointed to figure out the location - the ears are fixed and if we wish to maintain audio clarity as an object moves we have to move our heads. Meanwhile our four-legged companions merely swivel their ears to focus on a sound - they do not need to rotate their heads. But they also lack a calibration or feedback mechanism that would tell them how far their ears have moved.
It is because we cannot move our ears to focus audio without moving our heads that lead to the better spatial accuracy. It’s why duplicating it with artificial sources is so hard - the brain takes in a lot of information based on the way the head interacts with the audio to figure out where the sound is. This is what is called the Head-Related Transfer Function, or HRTF. The shape of your ears, your head, even your hair all shape the sound in very unique ways, and your brain, having grown with you, has figured out how your individual HRTF affects the sound.
Meanwhile, your pet’s HRTF changes every time they move their ears. Maybe less so for floppy eared pets over erect ears (think labrador versus say, a husky) but it changes

According to the manufacturer Corpower Ocean, it is the first DNV prototype certificate for a wave energy converter. The certificate confirms that Corpower’s technology meets DNV’s requirements for structural strength, reliability, and safety, Corpower Ocean announced. The certification process began in the design phase and lasted seven years. DNV oversaw the process from concept development through design, manufacturing, and assembly, to dry-running tests and subsequent operation.The report notes that the company is “planning the first two industrial-scale wave energy farms off the coasts of Portugal and Scotland,” which are scheduled to begin operating sometime between 2027 and 2029.
This is an important step, said Patrik Moller, CEO and one of the founders of Corpower Ocean. With the certification, wave energy is no longer just a promising technology, but a proven and financially viable one. This opens up new opportunities for project financing, insurance, and investments in commercial applications. The Corpower C4 wave power plant looks like a normal buoy: It consists of a 19-meter-long floating body with a diameter of 9 meters and a weight of approximately 11 tons. The system is anchored to the seabed. A mechanism inside the buoy converts its up-and-down movements in the waves into a rotary motion. This, in turn, drives a generator that produces electricity.

Here’s the fix:
It’s an interesting design. Anchored to the sea bed, with a linear shaft to move up and down on with the waves. It should be highly predictable, like wind and solar. They don’t mention how the cost compares to offshore wind, but it’s early days and diversity counts for something.
Despite the questions and risks associated with nuclear power, serious alternatives have been starved of funding since forever. So, yes, as a result this is an emergent technology rather than the obvious choice for littoral states.
The thing the certification does is that this thing now meets industrial standards and that you can actually depend on it. Before, it was a prototype. That stage is now past, which means cost, lifetime and reliability can be estimated reliably. Next step is to industrialize production. The added plus is that wave power is much more reliable than wind (because ocean waves are non-local) and predictions and planning can be done days in advance.
What this also shows is that the time-frame from successful demonstration to production-ready product that actually delivers is still around 30-50 years for new industrial machinery and anybody only going for short-term “successes” will have no longer term ones. There is no magic in engineering. Good products are boring, non-flashy and reliable. And that is exactly what you want in infrastructure.
There is no reason to be shocked. This is a new type of industrial machinery and these always take something like 30-50 years until all the problems are solved and the product is ready. Running a prototype for a year is easy. Making something that runs low-maintenance and high-reliability for a decade or longer is not. They have managed that now and can now look at mass-production and how to optimize that to bring cost down.
The thing is, and that is probably what has you “shocked” (I guess not really) is that in a time were we are bombarded by constant messages about “breakthroughs”, “game changers”, “innovations” and such, with basically all of them fake, lies or only incremental improvements, people have forgotten how long it actually takes to do anything right in the engineering space.
You’ll now be able to use selfie videos to log into your Google account. It has long been possible to log into Google using your face, via your phone’s face unlock or if your passkey login uses biometrics for verification. The worst part isn’t that now anyone who can get a few pictures of your face off the Internet can log in on your account. The worst part is that you can’t recover from it. You can’t change your face so once they’ve got it all you can do is disable this feature completely, and hope Google doesn’t re-enable it.
I am sure there is no way to out another phone in front of a locked phone and play a video with a face.
I’m making an assumption, but TFS notes that it directs you to look in various directions. If it varies what directions it asks for, that can be used to ensure it’s not simply a prerecorded video.
Though a live AI generated video for it would entail too much lag at the moment, that still seems like a huge weakness. Even worse, if they’re saving these videos, then THEY can easily create a video of your login motions in any order. It’s essentially enough info to build a full 3d model of your face. That means they could use it to login to OTHER sites on your behalf, unlike locally saved and verified biometric data.
Booster issues remain
This isn’t quite right. The 13-engine boost-back burn ended early, contributing to a splashdown about 20km short of the target. So there were problems before the landing burn’s partial relight. The booster splashdown was close enough that there was no danger to the public, but it was pretty far from the goal of landing as if to be caught by an imaginary tower at a precise, predetermined ocean location, as some previous boosters have done.
