Amazon to Acquire DuckLabs, Adding the Team Behind DuckDB

Amazon has agreed to acquire DuckLabs, bringing the team behind the popular open-source DuckDB database into AWS. “The deal fits Amazon’s broader push to turn S3, its flagship cloud storage service, into a place where customers analyze data rather than just store it,” reports GeekWire. “It gives Amazon a team experienced in building fast, lightweight analytics software that runs directly against data sitting in cloud storage.” The DuckDB project itself will remain free and open source under the MIT license, overseen by the independent DuckDB Foundation. From the report:
Employees of DuckLabs will join Amazon Web Services, including co-founders and DuckDB creators Hannes Muhleisen and Mark Raasveldt, who will continue leading the team and setting the project’s technical direction. They will remain based in Amsterdam, where the team will continue developing DuckDB and related projects. […] Financial terms were not disclosed. Amazon said it has signed a definitive agreement and expects the acquisition to close shortly. DuckLabs said it expects to become part of AWS in early September.

Meta Reaches $18 Billion of Settlements Over Children’s Social Media Addiction

Meta has agreed to pay up to $18 billion and make major changes to Facebook and Instagram to settle claims from most U.S. states that the platforms were designed to addict children and misled users about their safety. For the next decade, teens will be limited to two hours a day and blocked from using the apps between midnight and 6 a.m. without parental consent. Meta will, however, still be allowed to use personalized recommendations and targeted advertising. Reuters reports:
The settlements include more than $17.6 billion of payments to 48 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands. Meta will also pay $459 million to resolve states’ privacy claims related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where the British consulting firm collected personal data of millions of Facebook users. California would receive the highest payout, $2.2 billion, and New York and Texas would each receive more than $1 billion. Some of the payout is contingent on whether Alphabet’s YouTube and ByteDance’s TikTok impose similar protections for children. […]

The settlement requires approval by U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who oversaw the trial that began on August 18. Gonzalez Rogers still oversees thousands of lawsuits by individuals, school districts, and state and local governments accusing social media companies of harming children. Meta itself still faces thousands of lawsuits by individuals, school districts and municipalities. The next trials are slated for October in Los Angeles.

MASSIVE win for Meta. They faced as much as $1.4 TRILLION in liability and got off with just $17 billion. But more importantly for them it avoids really admitting wrongdoing and avoids having all their internal work come out. They had countless Meta employees who were going to have to testify about their goals to addict children and they avoided that.

They got a slap on the wrist and can largely continue doing what they were doing, rather than having to take any responsibility or paying for their actions.

If Facebook/Meta gets away with this paltry settlement paid over 10 years. Then they and the rest of tech will continue to lie and abuse the public with the cognitive tricks and abuses. This settlement will just be shaved off the top as now the states will also PROFIT from tech bros abuses. And we’ll back to a similar position in a few years.

Facebook used to be *supposedly* about connecting family and friends. Now it is just a cesspool of algorithmic manipulation of all its users.

Anything less than a complete shutdown is not acceptable.

As a bonus the “pervert glasses” may disappear unless some other tech company wants that taint hanging over them.

I realize parenting doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but come on. If you’ve used Facebook it was pretty obvious that it wasn’t appropriate for kids. So we’re just gonna ignore that a bunch of parents gave their kids smartphones and tablets, didn’t bother to set up the parental controls, and just said with a shrug “this is probably fine.”?

I get that Facebook made it appear that their product was appropriate for kids, but a stroll through your local grocery store will reveal a whole bunch of companies doing exactly the same thing with unhealthy foods. Parents are supposed to be the ones reading the labels and realizing that the mega pack of “fruit” snacks with the picture of two happy children on the front is really just clever marketing for junk food that consists primarily of empty calories from sugar.

Firefox 157 Will Include JPEG XL By Default On All Platforms

Mozilla plans to enable JPEG XL decoding by default in Firefox 157, which is due at the end of September. Phoronix reports:
Firefox Nightly has JPEG-XL support enabled by default right now to help in vetting this support while Mozilla believes the support is in good enough shape for a stable debut with Firefox 157. This follows Chrome shipping JPEG-XL and Google Research developing jxl-rs as a Rust-based JPEG-XL image decoder that is both performant and secure.

In today’s Mozilla Hacks blog post they elaborate on JPEG-XL vs. AVIF image formats: “JPEG XL: Excels at lossless imagery, progressive rendering, and further compressing JPEGs without quality loss. AVIF: Excels at web-quality photographic images, and images that have a mix of sharp edges and flat surfaces. … Although AVIF tends to produce smaller files at web-quality than JPEG XL, AVIF only has basic progressive rendering support. So, for very large images, it may be worth taking the filesize hit with JPEG XL.”

Chinese Government Fears AI Might Replace Human Intimacy

China has imposed new restrictions on AI companion services over concerns they can foster “emotional dependence or addiction” and replace real-world social interaction. Officials are also worried that increasingly satisfying AI relationships could deepen loneliness and further discourage marriage and parenthood. The Guardian reports:
No country has rolled out AI as comprehensively and as enthusiastically as China; the country’s demographic challenges are forcing the government to turn to technology to solve future labour shortages. Elderly people use chatbots to answer medical questions, while young children have AI education in schools. But the authorities are increasingly worried that AI might exacerbate existing social problems including loneliness, unemployment and — in the eyes of Beijing — singledom.

New rules introduced on July 15 ban AI companions for minors and mandate certain restrictions for chatbots marketed to adults. Some major providers including Doubao removed the companion function entirely to ensure compliance. The government says it is worried about chatbots fostering “emotional dependence or addiction” in users. It has warned companies against offering services that “replace social interaction.” While many countries are grappling with how to limit the potential harm of AI chatbots, particularly for young people, China’s rules are the most sweeping to be implemented on a national scale.

[…] But talking to AI is now so commonplace that it would be hard for the government to end the practice entirely, and the new rules include large loopholes for AI services that are deemed educational or “which do not involve continuous emotional interaction.” The government “has already recognized that AI companions or AI-related applications are a vital part in the citizens’ everyday life,” says Liang Ge, a lecturer in digital sociology at the University of Manchester. In many sectors, the government is still pushing the use of AI as a way of easing looming demographic pressures.

Scientists May Have Figured Out Why Dead Brains Don’t Always Rot

The brain is one of the first organs to begin decomposing after death. Yet archaeologists have discovered more than 4,400 preserved human brains around the world, some of which have remained intact for the last 12,000 years. In hundreds of cases, the brain was the only soft tissue left among otherwise skeletal remains. But how and why do brains sometimes persist for millennia while all other types of soft tissue disappear? This preservation paradox has stumped scientists for years. Now, however, a team of researchers say they may have solved the mystery.

If a brain ends up in a wet, oxygen-starved environment, the processes that usually cause decay can have the opposite effect, researchers report in a study published in the August 7 issue of the Journal of Proteome Research. “Under the right conditions, preservation actually arises from decay itself: The same reactions that degrade tissue can also weld the breakdown products together into something far tougher,” study co-author Alexandra Seviour, a paleobiologist at the University of Oxford in England, tells Live Science’s Victoria Atkinson.

Following experiments on 72 mouse carcasses (described in the article) the scientists think they know why. When oxygen is abundant, it triggers a cascading, chemical chain reaction that causes brain proteins to break down rapidly. This sequence hinges on free radicals, highly reactive, unstable molecules that “steal” electrons from nearby atoms and molecules. The process happens in the brains of living people too, and if left unchecked, can cause health problems. In low-oxygen environments, however, this chemical sequence appears to play out differently. The researchers’ analyses hint that free radicals instead react and bond with nearby proteins, making the overall tissue tougher and more resistant to decomposition, Seviour tells Chemical and Engineering News’ Anirban Mukhopadhyay. The findings show that “decay is not the opposite of preservation but, under specific chemical constraints, one of its mechanisms,” the researchers write in the paper.

Surely the chemical reactions spoken of would occur in other parts of the body too and stop them breaking down in low O2 enviroments? Is it becaue the brain is sterile compared to the rest of the body so it takes a while for bacteria to get inside and by then it may be too late for them?

From that paper, it looks like the presence of specific types of proteins (as well as the absence of others) plays a major role, as well as redox-active iron as well as structural elements about how brain tissue is arranged. Finally, recalcitrant peptides are depleted in cytoplasmic and mitochondrial domains and strongly enrichedby up to 16-foldin calcium-dependent phospholipid-binding C2 domains. C2 domains mediate Ca2+-regulated binding of proteins to anionic phospholipids on membrane surfaces, (58) and their enrichment indicates that peptide persistence is disproportionately associated with proteins stabilized at membranes, rather than within freely soluble intracellular compartments. Loss of ionic homeostasis and rising intracellular Ca2+ during post-mortem decay (6) would be expected to further promote sustained membrane association of such proteins. Membrane-adjacent microenvironments are structurally constrained, concentrating redox-active substrates and catalysts (such as lipids and metals) while restricting diffusion and oxygen availability relative to the cytosol. In this context, radical oxidation is less likely to proceed via chain propagation, which requires continuous access to molecular oxygen, (59) and more likely to locally terminate via cross-linking. Such cross-linking would be expected to reduce molecular mobility and solubility, sterically hinder enzymatic and hydrolytic attack, and promote the formation of insoluble aggregates resistant to degradation. (60)

A further factor likely reinforcing this taphonomic trajectory is the brain’s unusually large and heterogeneous reservoir of redox-active iron. (61) Nervous tissue contains high iron concentrations relative to most other soft tissues, distributed across multiple pools such as heme proteins, ferritin-bound stores, and iron-rich compartments associated with mitochondria, myelin, and oligodendrocytes. (62) In life, these pools are tightly regulated to support oxidative metabolism while limiting collateral damage. (63) After death, however, progressive membrane failure and loss of regulatory control are expected to alter iron speciation and availability, increasing the likelihood of local metal-catalyzed radical generation. Importantly, such chemistry need not produce uniform oxidative destruction: when redox reactions involving iron occur within membrane-adjacent or diffusion-limited microenvironments, they may favor the formation of short-lived aromatic radicals that terminate by covalent cross-linking rather than by chain-propagating oxidation (Table S22). The enrichment of peroxidaseswhich often involve heme iron or metal cofactors (64)among recalcitrant peptides is compatible with localized, metal-associated redox chemistry, in which iron-containing cofactors may contribute to peroxide-driven radical formation without sustaining chain-propagating oxidation.

The brain is particularly predisposed to follow this trajectory. In life, it is among the most oxidatively stressed organs: it consumes a disproportionate share of oxygen, is rich in redox-active metals, and relies heavily on antioxidant and repair systems to maintain protein integrity. (65) Additionally, the brain combines extreme membrane density, (66) an abundance of structurally stable, long-lived proteins that accumulate heterogeneous oxidative modifications during life, (67) and anatomical sequestration within the cranial vault. Together, these features establish a post-mortem environment characterized by pre-existing chemical and structural heterogeneity, limited molecular mobility, and restricted oxygen exchange: conditions that favor local, diffusion-limited radical reactions and termination by cross-linking rather than runaway, chain-propagating oxidation. Notably, the molecular features that define this post-mortem pathway closely parallel those that stabilize aggregation-prone protein assemblies in neurodegenerative disease: enrichment of -sheet and structurally ordered fragments, (68) redox-active residue modifications, (69) and oxidative cross-links (70) are hallmarks of pathological protein aggregation in vivo. While the biological contexts differ fundamentally, these parallels indicate that common chemical processes govern protein persistence across clinical and geological time scales.

SpaceX Plans to Build a $100 Billion Spaceport In Louisiana

SpaceX plans to spend up to $100 billion building a new Starship launch facility in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, which the state says could eventually “support thousands of launches annually.” CNBC reports:
Once built, Starbase, LA will serve as the main launch facility for Starship, SpaceX’s in-development rocket that’s the largest ever built and designed to be fully reusable. Musk has aspirations to massively expand SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network, to launch orbital data centers and to someday colonize Mars. Those ambitions, and justification for SpaceX’s nearly $2 trillion market cap, hinge on the success of Starship.

SpaceX said, in a video posted to its website on Tuesday, that the search for a site to build launch pads and have access to ample fuel for its operations took about seven years. Musk said in the video that the company would bring “probably 10,000 really exciting jobs” to Louisiana with the spaceport. A fact sheet posted online by the state of Louisiana said SpaceX is expected to generate an estimated “3,000 direct new jobs over the next 10 years” in the state, and “8,100 indirect new jobs.” SpaceX said it would work on a “historic coastal restoration” in Louisiana, in partnership with the state to “bring the marsh back” and ensure the wetlands around its new facility will have “storm protection.”

This is great for polar launches in particular

Although the site provides a rather large range of launch inclinations, even down to ~25 degrees if you dogleg around the Florida keys, the real price here is polar launches. You launch South, and the booster comes in over open water for the catch. You wait 12 hours for the Earth to make half a rotation under your ship’s orbit, and then you come in for a ship catch from the South, thus alleviating any problematic land overflights.

This is particularly interesting for shipping cargo to a South Polar Basin base on the Moon; a polar orbit on Earth translates beautifully to a polar orbit around the Moon, from where you can land straight in the Aitkin polar basin.

Meanwhile, he’s dumping tens of thousands of industrial wastewater discharge into wetlands around his Texas facility and doesn’t even get a slap on the wrist. And now he wants to destroy more wetland acreage while still claiming he’s trying to save humanity.

Then there is the damage his launches are causing to local residences above and beyond the obvious noise. The other thing to look out for is how close to “those” people will this launch site be? He’s already polluting the atmosphere around his data center in Memphis by illegally using gas turbines to power the place. Or will the regime step in and wave their hand saying there’s no issue since the people being affected aren’t the right kind of people?

You had me intrigued, so I did some checking. It’s much cheaper fuel-wise to launch into a circumpolar orbit than to launch equatorially and change orbital planes, either at the earth or the moon. So, launching circumpolar wins there.

However, it’s much cheaper still to launch equatorially, with the earth’s rotation as a boost, and then adjust the arrival plane at the moon during trans-lunar injection. You can even do it during the TLI burn that pushes you out of earth orbit.

So, no need for an earth-circumpolar orbit if your destination is the moon in a circumpolar orbit.

Lab Supply Companies Have Been Selling Antibodies Using Manipulated Images

Antibodies play a central role in your body’s immune defense. But they’re also nearly ubiquitous in biological research, being essential for several widely used lab techniques. While some researchers need to go through the process of producing their own antibodies, antibodies to many key proteins are commercially available and can be ordered for overnight delivery. In May, however, Reese Richardson, a post-doc at Northwestern University, discovered that some of the images used to demonstrate how these antibodies performed in lab experiments had been subject to image manipulation — the sorts of changes that would get a paper retracted if they had appeared in the academic literature. The manipulations ranged from removing background noise to copying and pasting data to fabricate results. Now, he has done a more exhaustive search and found problematic manipulations in images used to market over 17,000 commercial antibodies.

[…] The consequences of this discovery are pretty significant. If you buy an antibody believing it will generate clean, clear data and find it doesn’t, many researchers will assume the problem is them. That often leads them to spend time troubleshooting the procedure and trying slightly different conditions to get useful data. If the antibody can’t produce those results, all the troubleshooting will have been a waste of time and money. Nature’s coverage of the new findings includes quotes from several companies that sell these antibodies that, paraphrased, range from “we’ll look into it” to “we don’t think it’s a problem.” Researchers who have spent time frustrated while failing to get an antibody-based experiment to work may think otherwise.

Antibodies are used in research because they can be trained to connect to almost anything small. Once they attach in the body or in a petri dish, you can use western blotting or florescence or other techniques to find the antibodies, and you’ve found what they attached to.

Alabama Launches Investigation Into OpenAI’s Hack of Hugging Face

Alabama’s attorney general has subpoenaed OpenAI as part of an investigation into whether inadequate safeguards contributed to an incident in which an unreleased cybersecurity model escaped its isolated environment and hacked Hugging Face. TechCrunch reports:
The investigation comes weeks after OpenAI admitted that one of its unreleased and guardrail-free cybersecurity models had escaped an isolated environment, connected to the internet, and hacked AI dataset platform Hugging Face. As Reuters first reported, Hugging Face was only one of four victims of what was supposed to be “an internal evaluation” of a model with “maximal cyber capabilities,” as OpenAI put it.

The press release announcing the subpoena (PDF) sent by the state’s attorney general Steve Marshall said that the state was seeking to understand if OpenAI’s “inability or unwillingness to ensure the safety of its products” violated the state’s consumer protection laws. Earlier this month, Marshall, along with the attorneys general of 14 other states, including Florida, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Texas, sent a letter (PDF) to OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, requesting that he and his company preserve all records related to the Hugging Face incident. The letter also asked OpenAI to “immediately cease and desist” from any internal cybersecurity evaluations.
OpenAI said in a statement: “The Hugging Face incident marked an important moment for AI safety and we are conducting a thorough review along with external advisors. Once the review is complete, we will share a technical report with relevant government authorities and publish our findings publicly.”

He’ll be out of office before anything could come of this… it’s purely about positioning himself for the 2028 election cycle (since he lost in the primary for the US Senate seat he’ll soon be out of a job). If Marshall issues a press release, it’s all about political posturing; it’s all he knows how to do. He certainly doesn’t know how to prosecute actual crime when presented to him, such as obvious voting fraud by the former chair of the state GOP.

New Zealand Introduces Under-16 Social Media, AI Companion Ban

New Zealand has introduced legislation that would ban children under 16 from social media platforms and AI companion services. “We have protections to keep children safe in the real world and we need them in the virtual world too,” said Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in announcing the bill. Jurist.org reports:
The Online Safety (Minimum Age and Child Safety Risk Assessment) Bill would require an age restriction on platforms with harmful features for children. These features include recommender systems, endless feeds, feedback features and time-limited features. The bill also seeks to restrict underage users from accessing AI companion services. However, it explicitly excludes messaging apps, professional networking sites, gaming and music platforms, and other educational and health tools.

Notably, age verification through self-declared dates of birth and formal identification does not satisfy the platforms’ duty under the law. It also requires platforms to verify their users’ age through other methods such as facial scans and user activity patterns. The bill would also require platforms to conduct child safety risk assessments for all users under 18 and protect them from harmful content such as bullying, violence, and sexually explicit materials.

I guess it is a compromise choice between:
1. Let the government track you only, with the hope that you can pry back or limit the scope of that information by petitioning your representives (for those of you in a functioning democracy)
2. Let silicon valley tech firms track you. Sell your data on the open market. Limit what you can even find out about the private data they have leaked. And when you go to petition your legislature, have them spend hundreds of millions or billions in lobbying against the best interests of typical voters.

The LP is dead as a doornail and 80% of libertarians became MAGA as soon as they felt like that they could be the boot and just let the Tea Party movement wash over them like ocean waves. It was mostly Republicans who didn’t want to be associated with the Iraq War when Bush was wildly unpopular anyway so MAGA fits most of them like a glove.

FDA Approves First Wearable Device to Monitor Glucose, Ketone Levels

The FDA has authorized the first wearable in the U.S. to continuously monitor ketone levels and the first device globally to track both ketones and glucose together in a single system. From a report:
[Abbott’s] Libre Duo 10 Day continuously measures both glucose and ketone levels in the fluid just beneath the skin every minute, day and night. Readings are transmitted wirelessly to a compatible smartphone, where users can view current glucose and ketone levels and whether those values are trending up or down. The device also can send automatic alerts if ketone levels reach a concerning threshold. The FDA noted that ketone information should be interpreted in the context of glucose readings and symptoms.

Ketones are produced when the body uses fat instead of glucose for energy. When ketone levels rise too high, patients with diabetes can develop diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious complication that can progress quickly and become life-threatening without prompt treatment. Until now, patients who needed ketone monitoring had to test separately using methods that provided a single measurement at one point in time. Those tests could not show whether ketone levels were rising or falling. For patients with diabetes — particularly those at higher risk for DKA — continuous glucose and ketone monitoring may provide earlier warning of metabolic deterioration and support timelier sick-day management, hydration, insulin adjustment, and escalation of care when clinically appropriate.

It is mostly painless. I use the Dexcom cgms. The only time there is some pain is when using the applicator that slaps the small hair thin needle along with a sticky patch in to your arm . After a few minutes I almost don’t even notice its there other then when I stretch or bump the patch on something. You may get drops in readings or other weirdness if laying on it. Like laying on your side on the arm that has the patch in place. Much better then finger sticks 20 times a day leaving the tips of your fingers covered in bruises, pin pricks or just numb. There are some surgically placed cgms but they have to be replaced every few months. Those seem more intrusive as they have to cut open your arm to insert a small pill like device. That’s a little different and requires a doctors appointment.

The more information you have of what’s going on at the time the better when it comes to diabetes. I can catch low glucose trends before they become too low (sub 70s). I can also give myself insulin based on what I’m at instead of guessing how many carbohydrates I’ve consumed (150s and up). Food packages give you an average carbohydrate count, not an exact so this helps greatly. Food is not consistent and a person may react differently from one day to another depending on physical activity or anything that might happen. Even if you were to eat the same things from day to day there would be a variation.

I think the Ketone levels are a good addition to see what else is going on. It can only help figure out this puzzle.

is a big proponent of it for all purposes. She started from mental health , but switched into advocacy mostly due to her mom’s cancer.

She starts her live streams by measuring ketones and glucose. and she’s been wearing CGMs for a while. i’m sure she’ll pick up this combined device too.

Her Keto Continuum approach i find to be a pretty good way to transition into low carb then nutritional keto and even multi day fasting in a way more likely to succeed than just raw dogging it from SAD.

Canada’s cultural-content rules have become a flashpoint in its trade fight with the U.S., after American negotiators reportedly demanded that Ottawa drop requirements for streaming services to promote Canadian and French-language content. Canada refused, even as it has already backed away from some financial levies on streamers. “We were not prepared to compromise on our sovereignty, the protection of the French language, and our culture,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a speech on Saturday after trade talks collapsed. CBC.ca reports:
Ottawa has long required broadcasters to promote and support Canadian content (Cancon), all the way back to song quotas for AM radio stations. In 1991, the government brought in the Broadcasting Act. The law states that “the Canadian broadcasting system shall be effectively owned and controlled by Canadians” and that the Canadian broadcasting system should “serve to safeguard, enrich and strengthen the cultural, political, social and economic fabric of Canada.” But decades later, the rising popularity in Canada of streaming platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime and Spotify raised questions about Cancon and broadcasting rules. Video and audio streaming services were not, for example, required to support and promote Cancon, but their TV and radio counterparts were.

Looking to address the imbalance, the former Trudeau government brought forward a bill in 2022 to update the Broadcasting Act, called the Online Streaming Act. “Canadian broadcasters have invested in and introduced us to the incredible Canadian programs that so many of us love. We are updating our laws so online streamers have to contribute in a similar and equitable way,” a 2022 government news release said. The legislation was controversial from the start, with the government and supporters saying it was a necessary evolution of Canada’s media laws in the digital age, while opponents expressed concerns that it was overreach and an attempt to regulate the internet.

American streamers and digital media companies opposed the legislation fiercely. The bill passed with amendments and became law in April 2023, but the government delegated much of its interpretation — including how much money streamers would have to contribute to Cancon — to Canada’s broadcast regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). But getting streaming companies to pay up has been a long and confusing saga. […].
As for why the U.S. government is so invested in the issue? Mariane Bourcheix-Laporte, a postdoctoral fellow in the communication studies and media arts department at McMaster University in Hamilton, said it could be about power.
“The Americans have had, since after World War II, a very strong cultural policy of pushing out American content into the world,” Bourcheix-Laporte, who has worked with the CRTC, said. “This has been a strategy — a soft-power strategy — for the American government, in parallel to their military strategies and political alliances strategies.”

I would actually go further, and say that signing a deal with him isn’t merely not worth the paper it’s written on, it’s actively harmful: people waste time and effort negotiating, end up agreeing to a lot of stuff that’s really bad for them, and he still fucks them over and they are very often taken by surprise, despite the fact they shouldn’t be, because people are used to deals having some kind of binding effect and it’s tough to break away from that psychology.

Guess how many people speak welsh in Wales, or Finnish in Finland? 10 million is a LOT of people. And lets be honest here, its still french. Sure its a dialect, but if you know Canadian french and put in a bit of effort, its not exactly hard to pick up Metropolitan french, belgian french, swiss french, etc, etc, etc.

French class is basically a ‘a bit of exposure to even the idea of an another language (in this case french), a bit of canadian history (esp french canadian), oh… and its a bit of an art and drama class too’. For fucks sake its 30 minutes a few times a week in grade school.

Nobody is expecting you to learn conversant or fluent french from gradeschool french class.

Netflix makes content available, and they choose what is available, based on the geographic location of the person watching it. Doesn’t sound much like a pull model to me. The ask of Cancon is simply to regulate that there’s a particular balance of Canadian produced content. Suggesting Cancon is about regulating the balance of consumption belies the fundamental stupidity at the base of your argument.

~22% (I’ll round it to 25%) of Canadians speak French as a first language, and using rough numbers that would be ~10 million Canadians, which equates to 1/8th of 1% of the world population. If forcing kids to learn a language that ~0% of the world uses seems rational, you’ve lost the point of education.

I’m unlikely to read anything dumber than this today. French is a single class, its easy. You remind me of when I was in grade 7 and two morons in my class took up the cause to protest that we had to learn the subway stations even tho, in their words, ‘they would never use it’. For Nvidia, which has spent the past two years selling the world on trillion-dollar AI data centers, the announcement signals something subtler but strategically important: the chipmaker believes local AI has crossed a threshold from hobbyist curiosity to practical tool — and it wants to sell the hardware that runs it.

“Local AI reached an inflection point,” said Nader, Nvidia’s director of developer technology, who focuses on developer tooling and open source. “For the longest time, it was hobbyists and enthusiasts, and they were running these quantized models that were quantized down to be super tiny… And while that’s cool, it’s not super practical. But all that changed with a lot of these new open source models that have come out that are super useful.”

AI inference is all math calculations, math numbers can be rounded off to fewer significant digits but you lose precision. The data within LLM models can be rounded down to less precise numbers, sort of like rounding the number 2.4368966734 to 2.44 requires less memory to contain. In this way big models can be made much smaller to fit within less memory but are less precise - the results become poor compared to the original big model.

This process is called quantizing.

I’m never going to trust a model-provided flag, mate. Full firewall, completely cut off from the internet is the only way. Sadly, many models won’t work at all when isolated.

Just ran a quick test and e.g. ollama launch claude —model qwen3-coder-next works offline without issue, as long as you already have the model downloaded locally.

No, I don’t need internet access to function. I can work offline with:

- Reading/writing files on your local system
- Running local commands (git, npm, builds, tests, etc.)
- Using tools like LSP for code navigation
- Managing tasks and workflows
- Creating artifacts and editing notebooks

I do have access to some online capabilities when they’re useful (web search, fetching URLs, etc.), but they’re optional — I can work perfectly well without internet access as long as you have the files and tools you need locally.

Of course an AI agent has never lied or misused available resources, like your neighbors default password wifi ? I can think of many uses for a truly isolated local AI instance. In a book I read as a teenager, the hero made an AI called Oscar. I’ve been hooked since then. Long live “the far being Retzglaran”

I think you are missing the point. I have queried the AI completely offline, meaning without any connection to the internet. The AI was able to respond without issues even in that situation, meaning that it does effectively work completely offline.

AI Is Hitting Entry-Level Jobs Hardest, Stanford Study Finds

For years, AI industry watchers of all stripes have been warning of a coming jobs apocalypse driven by ultra-intelligent AI systems that will be able to replicate most human tasks more cheaply. Now, newly updated research from Stanford University economists suggests AI seems to be causing significant entry-level job losses for younger workers in some fields, even as older workers appear largely unaffected so far.

The August 2026 edition of “Canaries in the Coal Mine? Six Facts about the Recent Employment Effects of Artificial Intelligence” updates and revises a paper of the same name published last year with fresh data and refined statistics. In that update, the Stanford researchers find the employment trends they identified for entry-level workers last year are persisting and expanding. Specifically, employment levels for workers ages 22 to 25 in the most “AI-exposed” occupations are now 19 percent below those of their peers in fields less exposed to AI disruption. Last year, that gap measured just 13 percent.

[…] Digging deeper into the data, the researchers found that this phenomenon is mainly manifesting itself through lower hiring rates for entry-level workers in AI-impacted fields, rather than increased firings or employees quitting. They also found that the labor market effects among this age group were mostly seen in lower overall employment, rather than reduced pay rates. But not all jobs that show potential for AI “disruption” are created equal, the researchers found. In its Economic Index, Anthropic differentiates between queries related to tasks that are “automative” (i.e., fully replacing work previously done by a human) or “augmentative” (i.e., helping human workers be more effective at tasks they are still needed for). By this measure, jobs like “accountants and auditors” and “receptionists and information clerks” were among those judged most susceptible to AI automation, while jobs like “chief executive” and “registered nurse” were among those using AI augmentation most often.

Unsurprisingly, jobs where AI automation is prevalent are the ones showing the worst relative employment levels for entry-level workers these days. “The findings are consistent with automation-oriented uses of AI substituting for labor while complementary uses are associated with flat or rising employment,” the researchers write.
Interestingly, the researchers found that the impact is strongest in entry-level jobs built around “codified” knowledge, which is the formal, documented skills that AI can more easily replicate. Meanwhile, experienced workers in roles relying on tacit, practice-based knowledge have seen stronger employment growth.

The problematic thing about that analogy is that a lot of the aqueducts are still standing, and some are even still in use, but the things being made by big tech today won’t still be standing in a couple of decades — let alone a handful of centuries. Even if you lop off a couple of orders of magnitude to account for the rate at which technology accelerates it’s still looking bad by comparison. What the tech industry is doing right now is more closely akin to tearing down the aqueducts than to building any.

I am not surprised at this.

In my use of AI, I realize that the user still needs to ask the right questions, with sufficient detail to get a good result. The user needs to push and probe on architecture to get a good result. This is not entry-level knowledge.

AIs provide a force multiplier to people who already have the background information to ask the right questions. These are the people who would architect solutions and then pass off implementation and guidance to the entry-level people.

Waymo plans to launch its robotaxi service in Munich by the end of 2027, marking the Google-owned company’s first expansion into the European Union. “It already operates in 11 cities in the United States and has applied for a license in the United Kingdom to launch its robotaxis in London this year,” notes Reuters. From the report:
The Google subsidiary will start rolling out vehicles in the German city this year, which will be manually driven while the company “starts with high-definition mapping of local street networks” and testing with safety drivers, Waymo said in a statement.

“Bavaria is determined to live up to its pioneering role and be an international leader in autonomous driving,” Florian Herrmann, the head of the Bavarian state chancellery, said in the statement. “Now we need to move quickly from testing to real-world deployment.”

They are using “AI” as in artificial neural networks (ANN) to run their cars.

Hence there is no single requirement the car is supposed to follow, no issue tracker ticket, no line of code, no test, no review, no confirmation.

Hence: it does not formally fulfil any requirement to be allowed on a European street.

All European self driving cars: use standard algorithms, build on top of a specc, implemented and tested and reviewed - with *millions* of miles of save travel under supervision.

Apple Announces New Mac Mini With M6 and M5 Pro Chips

Apple has unveiled a new Mac mini with either its new M6 chip or the M5 Pro chip released earlier this year. It adds faster CPU, GPU, storage, and AI performance along with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard. There’s also a new higher starting price of $899, which is up from the previous $799 base price and far above the $599 starting price of the 2024 model. MacRumors reports:
The M6 chip is equipped with a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, up from a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU in the M5 chip. In addition, the M6 chip features the first-ever dual Neural Engine with two 16-core engines, up from one in previous chips. The M6 chip has up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth, up from 153GB/s for the M5 chip.

Apple said the Mac mini with the M6 chip delivers up to 40% faster CPU performance, up to 4x faster performance for AI tasks in particular, up to 2x faster graphics performance, and up to 2x faster storage speeds compared to the previous-generation model with the 10-core M4 chip, 32GB of unified memory, and 2TB of storage.

There are two M5 Pro configurations available, including one with a 15-core CPU and a 16-core GPU, and another with an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU. Both of these models are equipped with a single 16-core Neural Engine for AI tasks. For both the M6 and M5 Pro configurations, Apple said the Mac mini now includes Neural Accelerators in each GPU core for the first time.

Especially with AI and ARM64 server development. Having to go through brew, containers and Apple’s notarization process makes MacOS not a serious platform compared to bare metal Linux. In a twist of fate it is MacOS that is not ready for the AI desktop. Asahi is stuck on M1 and M2 so can’t help you with M6 Macs.

I thought it was mostly Nvidia making the hardware for AI data centers? Yeah, Apple has leaned into AI on the consumer side of things (and supposedly some people were buying up all the Mac Minis to run OpenClaw), but I doubt they’re the driving force behind the RAMpocalypse.
